I think this poem is saying that it's hard hating someone that you love blindly. It's like a person's heart goes from fire to ice when your mind is telling you that this person isn't the one for you. It's like you hate with your mind and love with your heart. The speaker romanticizes this feeling of love and hate for a person that consumes one especially when its an unrequited love.
