Amazon.com essential video: This massive 1977 adaptation by director Richard Attenborough (Gandhi) of Cornelius Ryan's novel features an all-star cast in an epic rendering of a daring but ultimately disastrous raid behind enemy lines in Holland during the Second World War. A lengthy and exhaustive look at the mechanics of warfare and the price and futility of war, the film is almost too large for its aims but manages to be both picaresque and affecting, particularly in the performance of James Caan. The impressive cast includes Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Dirk Bogarde, Sean Connery, and Liv Ullmann among others. While not a classic war film, it nevertheless manages to be a consistently interesting and exciting adventure. --Robert Lane

I don't believe the Blu-Ray version is any better than the standard DVD version in terms of clarity and viewing experience. It seems to me that all that was done was to take the standard DVD format and put it in Blu-Ray packaging. Certainly not worth the Blu-Ray price.

I think you should watch A Bridge Too Far and then Patton (If you still haven't seen it)
They are great films!

To cater to the ego of one man (Montgomery), whose plan this was, was unbelievable! I never could understand how he was such an ... Read More

This is a realistic and good war movie. War is hell and it's good to see a battle that didn't in allied victory protrayed onscreen. It makes you realize that like all wars that one could have been lost without alot of sacrifice. It's a sweeping movie and is historically accurate which is another plus. ON blu ray this movie looks better than ever , it could have been remastered probably though. The colors restored and brought out more. However the print is a good one with no lines or blotches so ... Read More
