I happen to agree with Lauren on the point of heartbreak but not on the point of politics. Several of Blake's poems have referenced to politics but i beleive the purpose of this poem is to express the sorrows of love. I think that many of the previous comments have been too specific, focusing on a certain aspect such as rape is not a probable cause. A more genral and deeper expression is that of love and the possible mental disasters associated with being attached.

I DONT THINK IT HAS ANYTHIONG TO DO W/ SEX OR CHEATING BUT RATHER HEARTBRAKE AND THE SINGLE SIDEDNESS OF LOVE AT TIMES OR HOW CRUEL LOVE CAN BE WHEN IT IS ONE SIDED GET UR MINDS OUT OF THE GUTTER NOT EVERY SAD THING HAS TO DO W/ SEX RAPE OR STUFF LIKE THT THINK DEEPER... OR IT COULD BE OF ABUSE NOT NECCESARILY SEXUAL JUST ABUSE IN GENERAL...OR IT COULD BE POLITICS??? POLITICS CAN DESTROY MANY THINGS LIKE ..COUNTRIES..ECONOMIES..PPL..LIVES THINK ABOUT IT

this is a great poem and it can really be taken in a number of ways besides the sexual part of it. i think that it can also mean death because the worm is the devil sneaking into his next victim at night which is represented by the rose.

A rose is a clear symbol of love, passion and woman ..it also represents the gentals ,purity, and love ...here the rose or the young beautiful woman is inffected by a warm which eats up it's root and leads it to die..as if it was a masculine force that creeps in the night under the cover of darkness and the chaos of a storm to this young lady's bed to kill her sofly by his dark secret love which simply destroys the woman's life and tore her heart up...

I think that is is about a man having an affair with anoth woman and is has made his wife sick. The "invisible worm" i feel represents the dark deceit that took place at night that had wrigled in between the two loves to destroy "rose" which is the love that has withered by it. Even though I am only 14 I find this poem very complex yet simple to understand. I think Blake wrote this poem so that everyone could have a different view on it.

It's actually fairly probable that the rose, whatever it is, does not know something is wrong... why else would the narrator of the poem have to address it? The narrator is speaking to the rose directly, not to us.

None of you are even close!Your assumptions are not supported by the text. Mental sexual affliction. I might return to explain my claims.

i have chosen to analyse this poem as a source text for a text transformation for my a level english coursework. After close analysis of the poem i have chosen to use the idea that the poem is closely related to deceit however i also believe that another strong idea is rape and loss of virginity. I am basing the poem on deceit using the idea that the sick rose, has become frail and withered much liek a dying rose beacause of the effect that love has had upon her. love works like an illness causing people into a state of grief.("sick")This love can blind the truth "invisble worm that flies in the night"represents the betrayal and deceptive actions of the man linked to the rose-woman.The howling storm represents the craziness that the woman suffers in her mind. her bed of crimson joy is happiness that there sex life once was, but the deceit/affair "dark secret love" has now destroyed her life.the woman is compared to a rose because it is a rare blossomed beauty, but one which dies quickly. Although she is beautiful she cannot hold onto her man, looks cannot make love last. i also believe that the woman wil take her life because of the love she gave but never truly had herself. What are your views?

Rose may be the woman's name but there is an ambiguity the writer tries to explain that marriage destroys love...
