William Blake - Infant Sorrow

My mother groand! my father wept,
Into the dangerous world I leapt:
Helpless, naked, piping loud:
Like a fiend hid in a cloud.

Struggling in my fathers hands:
Striving against my swaddling bands:
Bound and weary I thought best
To sulk upon my mother's breast.

Poet: William Blake Poem: Infant Sorrow Volume: Songs of Experience Year: Published/Written in 1789 Comment 2 of 2, added on April 17th, 2006 at 11:13 AM. this poem expresses how children are repressed from the very moment they are born from the people closest to them their parents. Blake argues that complexity of thinking and years of age are not defining characteristics of experience. I think this poem is excellent and the line 'sulk upon my mothers breast' is one of the best lines Blake has ever written.
