Analysis and comments on French Revolution, The (excerpt) by William Blake

Comment 1 of 1, added on July 22nd, 2006 at 9:11 PM.

Blake as radical. Unfinished work (he had planned to write seven volumes about this topic)which is not filled with the usually challenging symbols and double meanings typical of Blake's writing style.
Written before the completion of the French Revolution, this excerpt gives the urgency that was felt at the time. Reference of hues of red are heavily used in lines 84-93; the plight of the common people is realistically rendered, and the poem is mainly presented in speech form--as a means of justifying the war actions that must be undertaken.
There are names that can be looked up on the Web to give further understanding to the historical context of this poem. Overall, I think just reading through the poem is not too challenging. It's easy enough to get the general picture.
