No one has mentioned the absolute perfection of the line: "The sun was white, as though chidden of God." This works on more than one level--the dreary autumn day, with an overcast sky through which the sun shines dimly, a white sun. But, on a deeper level, the image of the sun losing its fiery glow because of God's anger, reflects the mood of the rejected lover--nature echoing his despair.
