Criticism on Sir Phlip Sidney's Loving in Truth

The poet in Sidney gives imagination precedence to all other devices of poetic- creativity. To him poetry is an unpremeditated art .It is simply the spontaneous over flow of powerful feelings.
Sidney’s attitude to love as revealed in Loving in Truth is Platonic .Here the lover does not plead for sensual love .The love remains unrequited .It is somewhat divine . The motto is to establish a soul to soul relation ship .Its nature is something like ;
“The desire of the moth for the star,
Of the night for the morrow,
The devotion of some thing afar ,
From the sphere of our sorrow”.
The images employed by the poet are worth noting .Some of such images are :Sun-burned brain ,blackest face of woe ,truant pen ,step-dem ,etc .The images commensurate to the theme of the poem and the poet’s propagation of poetic creativity .
The structure of the sonnet is almost Petrarchan. The fourteen-lined poem is divided into two parts ,-octave and sestet ,that is ,the first eight lines and the last six lines . The riming pattern is ,-abab , cdcd ,efef and gg . The only deviation is the concluding couplet .
Sidney’s claim of originality in theme and poetic-creativity can not be wholly approved. His attitude to love for Penelope echoes to Patriarch’s love to Laura, or Dante’s love to Beatrice. And again he follows Petrarchan pattern. The only departure is the rejection of attributing goddess-like qualities to his mistress. Besides , he pronounces the language of heart .
But a second thought on this poem leads the readers to discover the sex impulse of the poet .Knowing the mistress married ,Sidney cleverly tries to seduce her.He begs pity and , just like the swines of the conventional sonnets .

The present sonnet,-Loving in Truth goes back to Petrarchan tradition of courtly-love .Sidney need not falsify the "Truth" by creating a Muse that implies his lady,-the wife of Lord Rich .For sending to sleep the affair and giving an eye-washing to his readers,he tries to conceal the love-arrowed swine in him by the theory of poetic creativity borrowed from Aristotle .

The poem represents self-cheating.Sidney the poet being frausted in love hides his true intention and redirects his readers to poetic-creativity.But the irony is thathe worships the lady and behs her to be the Muse of his love-lorn songs .
