Siegfried Sassoon - Suicide In The Trenches

I knew a simple soldier boy
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
No one spoke of him again.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

Suicide In The Trenches - Comments and Information

the poem is a war poem of cource describing the hardships of war. Sassoon talks down the the "common people" who do nothing and know nothing about the war. all they do is cheer for the men then run away trying to hide from the truth of war. they dont want to know what was is like, what happens to the men, they are just glad they are not in it. Sassoon is a satirical anti-war poet. He is making fun of the foolish people.

The poem "sucide in the trenches" has great mean to me and it shows the way that humans can celerbrate the hero's, but forgot the dead hero's. Or the one's that take there life, because the pain of war is to much to bear. This poems rhymth certainly helps with its meaning. In my opinion this poem is the best poem by Sassoon.

in response to comment 5:

Sassoon wrote during/about World War I. "the pain and suffering that the jews had to go through" was World War II. get your facts right first, huh?
