This poem was written while he was in a hospitol, after declaring himself a pasafist he bagan to feel that he had abandoned his men, that is the meaning of this poem, shortly after he reenlisted for front line duty.

This is another of Sassoon's poems that is difficult to interpret. I think sometimes some poems mean much, much more to the poet that writes then than to anyone else. But not to be critical, for Sasson must surely be a great poet to be listed here, I will read again and again this poem so that, hopefully, each time I read and/or recite it, I may gain a little bit more of an understand and appreciation of it. What do you think about it?
