Robert Herrick - Divination By A Daffodil

When a daffodil I see,
Hanging down his head towards me,
Guess I may what I must be:
First, I shall decline my head;
Secondly, I shall be dead;
Lastly, safely buried.

daffodils

Is this a forerunner of 'Fair daffodils we weep to see you haste away so soon'? Unusual to find a poem about a single daffodil. Although wild daffodils were quite common everywhere at this time, Devon is still associated with wild daffodils. See Ted Hughes poem in 'Birthday Letters'.
