The warriors heart sweetens life and makes it possible for the woman to arm herself with love.

that Neruda meant the artichoke looks like a heartless type of vegetable (or human) while inside the artichoke is soft and tender.
So outside = warrior, militia, scaring...
inside = soft, delicate, tender...
Even his wife Maria buys an artichoke.... and is not afraid of it...
