Analysis and comments on Sohrab and Rustum by Matthew Arnold

A wonderful poem which has left an indelible impression on me. I find it hard to believe though that Rustum would totally abandon his family because he got a daughter and not a son. Curiosity alone should have taken him back home.

I actually did post a comment sometime ago, but it's not here. What can I say? I read Sohrab and Rustum and I weep as I did when I first read it in 1968. It is a majestic, moving poem.

The poem which I studied as a schoolboy some 50 years ago carries at least 2 messages: the inevitability of fate as portrayed later by O'Hara? in Appointment in Sumatra and the concept of a man dying in order to save his fellows.

I had to learn this poem as a punishment by the English teacher in about 1955. I still remember some chunks of it !!!
