Viewed 570 times and no comments! Hard to believe. At first, I thought perhaps Matthew Arnold's father was a pastor, but, upon checking, found he was an educator. I recently attended a 51st class reunion. Three of my teachers were also able to attend. I have a great deal of respect for all three, especially the lady who taught me algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. I remember other teachers with respect and affection. I was lucky enough to have, mostly, great teachers.
My other reaction was to feel Arnold's pain at losing his father. I lost my own father a little over three years ago, and still get very teary thinking of him. At his funeral, I read a poem entitled "I Had A Father Who Talked With Me," which expressed exactly my feelings about my father. I was lucky there, too.
