For 45 years I have not been without a copy of Selected Poems to which this poem forms the prologue. It is I think one of the most beautiful poignant and evocative works in the English Language. To read it is to be drenched in the bittersweet sorrow of Thomas in his room on the rocks, with him as he wrenched the words onto the pages, eyed and understood the shapes on the shore in the fading light of the evening sun. This intensely personal work prepares the reader for what is to come.
