Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - James Joyce on film
So glad this movie has finally become available on DVD. It is one of my favorite films to watch during the Christmas season. Sometimes Joyce's stories need several readings to get a full understanding of what he communicating. This movie helps one really understand where is is leading us. The time and the atmosphere of Dublin at the turn of the century are beautifully captured. Angelica Huston must have loved working on this film with her Dad.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Lionsgate has lousy customer service
The NYTimes reported that Lionsgate was reissuing this marvelous movie with the missing 10+ minutes cut for no reason and gave a telephone/e-mail contact to receive an un botched copy. Two months and multiple attempts to contact them later, I am left with the expurgated version.

It's focus on a lost first love and its different responses in a long time married coupled is a highlight. An Irish song at the end of the holiday ... Read More

The following information applies to DVD's sold in the US. There are two versions of "The Dead" floating around. The correct "full length" version is catalogue number 27301 which appears on the actual disc and also above the bar code on the back cover of the DVD. The correct time (83 minutes) is also at the bottom of the DVD back cover. The "edited" version (73 minutes and missing important footage) is catalogue number 26399 which also appears on the disc and above the bar code. It is impossible to ... Read More
