In this inspirational costume drama, Michael Apted (49 Up) recounts a period in British history sure to be unfamiliar to most Americans. In fact, his eye-opening biography of 18th century abolitionist William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd) is likely to come as a revelation to many Britons, as well. After all, despite the presence of his wife, Barbara (Romola Garai), this isn't a particularly "sexy" story, but it is a powerful one. The title comes from John Newton's hymn "Amazing Grace" ("I once was lost but now am found"). Newton (Albert Finney) was a former slaveholder, who became a clergyman and spent his days repenting. While America had John Brown, England had Wilberforce, and Newton is one of many who helped the MP to abolish slavery in the UK. The story begins towards the end of Wilberforce's mission when he's sick with colitis and addicted to laudanum. Apted continues to alternate between 1797 and 1789, when Wilberforce was fitter and more idealistic, and ends in 1807 as his efforts come to fruition. Apted and writer Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things) do right by their hero. Unlike Amistad, however, slaves are largely off-screen, with the exception of author Equiano (Senegalese vocalist Youssou N'Dour). Amazing Grace reserves its focus for the politicians who risked their reps for the greater good, like Wilberforce and Prime Minister Pitt (an excellent Benedict Cumberbatch), and those more concerned with the income slavery provided their constituents, like Lord Tarleton (CiarĂ¡n Hinds) and the Duke of Clarence (Toby Jones). --Kathleen C. Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Very Moving
I loved this movie. I don't usually write reviews, I just read them, but when I read that some of the reviewers called the movie boring, I had to write. If your looking for sex and violance, this movie won't be for you,but if your looking for someone who made a diffferance in history as well as man kind. This movie is defanatly one you should watch. I found it very heart moving and inspirational.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Better than history but it is true
The historical account of the people and events is more than entertaining and interesting while being factual and true, what you would think is an impossibility.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - I Love It
This movie is sad and happy. I feel that every family should see this movie. I'm been thing what would be if William Wilberforce was still here on Earth, What would the world look like now with William Wilberforce. There is also a Bible study guide on the DVD. Can't wait until I can watch it again. It is too much to take in after seeing the whole movie.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Love it! Very inspiring based on true story!
Watch it any time you need to be reminded to fight for what is right!

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - The Frail Health of 19th Century Brit Aristocracy Exposed!
Sucking stale, coal-stained air in the shadows of the dawn of the Industrial Age can have its drawbacks. Just ask Wm. Wilberforce and his sickly young compadre. Both young chaps were seen coughin' up blood and chunks of lung upon their fluffy sickbeds over the course of this finely fluffed little walk-thru concerning the unspeakable horrors of the slave trade. (Some would justify the exclusion of any actual slaves by claiming that this movie is not intended to be about slavery at all, but rather ... Read More
